1927年、青木恵哉先生は熊本の回春病院から救ライ伝道のために沖縄に送られてきました。当時はハンセン病への無理解から、激しい差別や偏見、迫害に遭う時代でした。そのような艱難苦闘の中にあっても、青木先生は仲間たちと共に歩み、1938年、屋我地大堂原に現在の国立療養所「沖縄愛楽園」の基を築きました。

園内に建てられた教会（現在の「祈りの家」教会）は、宗派や個人の背景に関係なく、病に苦しむ人々が安心して祈り、寄り添い合える愛に満ちた場所となりました。青木先生はみんなから「タンメー（おじいちゃん）」と慕われ、多くの人々の人生に大きな影響を与え続けました。

ドキュメンタリー映画制作への想い

来年2027年は、青木恵哉先生の来沖100年という大きな節目を迎えます。 時が経つにつれ、当時の記憶を持つ人々は少なくなり、記録も失われつつあります。今、記録に残さなければ、彼の尊い生涯と、沖縄愛楽園の歴史を未来へ繋ぐことはできません。これが「最後のチャンス」です。

「あぶらむの里」の主宰者・大郷博先生（1968年より長年、愛楽園や祈りの家教会を支えてこられた方）を中心に、現在ドキュメンタリー映画の制作・編集が進められています。この尊い業を支えるため、沖縄教区も微力ながら全面的に協力したいと願っています。皆さまの温かいご理解とご支援を、心よりお願い申し上げます。

About Keisai Aoki

In 1927, Keisai Aoki was sent from Kaishun Hospital in Kumamoto to Okinawa for missionary work dedicated to aiding those with Hansen's disease (leprosy). Despite facing severe discrimination, prejudice, and persecution due to the profound misunderstandings of the era, Mr. Aoki stood firmly alongside his peers. In 1938, they laid the foundation for what is now the National Sanatorium Okinawa Airakuen.

The church established within the sanatorium (now known as the "House of Prayer" Church) became a sanctuary filled with God's love. It was a place where people suffering from the disease could pray and find solace together, regardless of their denomination or background. Affectionately called "Tanmei" (Grandpa) by all, Mr. Aoki’s presence and deep faith transformed the lives of countless individuals.

The Mission Behind the Documentary

The upcoming year, 2027, marks the 100th anniversary of Keisai Aoki’s arrival in Okinawa. As time passes, personal memories are fading, and without immediate action, these crucial historical records will be lost forever. This project represents our final opportunity to preserve his legacy for future generations.

Dr. Hiroshi Osato, leader of "Aburamu no Sato"—who has been deeply involved with Airakuen and the House of Prayer Church since 1968—is currently filming and editing this historical documentary.
